”Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.” — Deuteronomy 10:16
What does it mean to circumcise? Physically, it means the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the male reproductive organ. However, to circumcise the heart in this context does not mean to physically alter our organs. Instead, it means to intentionally yield to the spiritual transformation of our hearts. It is the removal of sin, pride, stubbornness, and rebellion so that we can truly love and obey God.
God focuses entirely on our inner spiritual state rather than our physical appearance (1 Samuel 16:7). He looks for an inward change of character, which is what truly qualifies us as “circumcised” in His sight. The Apostle Paul further explains that a genuine child of God is one who has been transformed inwardly by the Holy Spirit, not just one who carries an outward, physical appearance of righteousness (Romans 2:28-29).
Just as medical research has shown that physical circumcision offers some health benefits to the body, spiritual circumcision also brings powerful advantages to our spirit and soul:
• Answering the Highest Call: Everyone will have an opportunity in life to hear the message of salvation in Christ. We are enjoined to yield to this great invitation whenever it comes and stop being hard-hearted. (Please refer to our previous post, “SPECIAL TREASURE,” which talks about this grand invitation from the King of kings).
• Preservation of Life: A biblical benefit of a circumcised heart is the preservation of life, which yields to a true, vibrant, and eternal life (Deuteronomy 30:6).
• Positioned Under Grace: A circumcised heart positions us safely under God’s grace instead of exposing us to His judgment (Jeremiah 4:4).
• Divine Approval: A circumcised heart gains us ultimate approval from God rather than man, which builds a genuine, unshakeable relationship with Him (Romans 2:29).
• Freedom From Sin: This inner transformation from a circumcised heart, delivers us from continuous, repetitive patterns of sin, rebellion, and disobedience (Colossians 2:11).
In conclusion, physical circumcision was merely an outward sign of an old covenant, but a heart circumcision is the reality of the new covenant through Jesus Christ.
God does not want a superficial display of faith; He desires a deep, internal cutting away of everything that separates us from Him. Let us stop resisting the Holy Spirit today. Open our heart, surrender our pride and allow God to transform us from inside out so we can live a life that truly honors Him.
